Psychology & Sociology are part of the Social Sciences department which also includes, Geography, Economics, Health & Social Care, and Early Child Development. 

We currently offer A level Psychology and Sociology (both AQA), with Forensic Psychology enrichment. The Social Sciences Department is one of the largest in the College and has had notable success in attracting and retaining students. Psychology is a popular course and at present there are 381 students following the syllabus, while Sociology has 235 students. Student success rates in examinations are very good.

The Department has a strong reputation for being supportive and welcoming. New colleagues receive practical assistance with books, teaching resources and any other support they may need. Staff work closely together to plan schemes of work, share resources and exchange good practice. The Department also maintains strong links with local schools and employers. Courses are well resourced and taught in large, dedicated teaching rooms. Innovative approaches to teaching and learning are welcomed and supported.

We aim to build constructive and supportive relationships with our students. In keeping with Queen Mary’s tradition, staff and students are on first-name terms. Teachers are committed to providing a high level of support and give generously of their time to help students succeed.

Our priorities are to maintain and build on our strong examination outcomes, sustain high levels of student retention; and provide an engaging, interesting and active learning experience for every student.

Our curriculum is diverse and engaging, covering:

• A Levels: Psychology, Sociology, Geography, Economics

• BTEC/CTEC: Health & Social Care and Early Child Development

• Enrichment: Forensic Psychology & Subject specific workshops

The Role

We are looking for a passionate teacher of Psychology and Sociology who believes in inclusion and progression for every student. Teaching Duties 

The person appointed will teach predominantly A level Psychology and Sociology. Flexibility to teach other courses is desirable 

Our students are currently studying:

AQA Psychology: 

Paper 1: Introductory Topics in Psychology

Paper 2: Psychology in context, 

Paper 3: Issues and Options in Psychology (we cover schizophrenia, gender and forensic psychology)

AQA Sociology: 

Paper 1 Education.

Paper 2 Families & Household & Beliefs/Media. 

Paper 3 Crime & Deviance.

Opportunities may occasionally arise to teach outside the Department, although this cannot be guaranteed. Where possible, the College will accommodate individual subject preferences, taking account of relevant experience and skills.

Key Responsibilities

1. Teaching & Learning: Deliver a varied timetable across our departmental provision. We aim for flexibility, matching your specific skills and interests to our courses wherever possible.

2. The Personal Tutor Role: More than just administration, our tutors are the primary mentors for our students. You will:

o Support: Guide students through their academic journey via one-to-one consultations, identifying and removing barriers to learning.

o Inform: Act as the first point of contact for college policies and provide a steady hand for students navigating personal or academic challenges.
